The Richest Person In New Zealand: Graeme Hart And His $9 Billion Hefty Bag Fortune

Chances are, you use several of the products manufactured by New Zealand's richest person almost every day. Well technically these products are manufactured by a private equity firm called Rank Group which is controlled by a man named Graeme Hart. Thanks to Rank Group and it's diverse set of assets, Graeme Hart is worth $8.7 billion. Over the years, Rank Group has built up a consumer product empire by acquiring food and beverage packaging companies through leverage buyouts (LBOs). The majority of Hart's wealth comes from his sole ownership in the Reynolds Group which you probably know mainly from its products Reynolds Wrap and Hefty trash bags. It's safe to say you've interacted with one of Hart's products very recently no matter where in the world you live. From high school drop out to billionaire business mogul. The journey of Graeme Hart is certainly fascinating….

Richest Person in New Zealand – Graeme Hart
Graeme Hart was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1955. His dad was a radiologist. Graeme dropped out of school (the very same one that Russell Crowe attended) at the age of 16 to become an auto body repairman and tow-truck driver. Who knew back then what riches awaited him in the future? In 1976, he founded Hart Printing Company, hired two employees and was off and running. He applied and was accepted to the University of Otago's MBA program, one of only a few applicants without an undergraduate degree (or in Hart's case, a high school diploma).
Graeme's grad school thesis offered a glimpse into his future and laid out his plan for Rank Group. He wrote a treatise on finding cheap, easy-to-run, underperforming businesses that produce products people use every day. Moreover, the focus of his theses was on how to use leveraged buyouts to acquire those assets. He then went on to write about how to cut costs, consolidate operations and then either take the company public or sell at a profit. This became the blueprint he would follow on his way to becoming a billionaire.

After college, Hart bought and merged four party supply companies in the mid-80s. This created a monopoly on the party supply market in Auckland. He sold the company at a profit and reinvested his profits into a safety clothing company. It was also at this time that Hart founded Rank Group and sold shares in it on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. When the stock market collapsed in 1987, he took Rank Group private.
Hart scored when he was able to buy New Zealand's government printing office in 1989 for half it's book value, just $12 million. He then proceeded to buy New Zealand's largest book store chain for $42 million in 1990, then scooped up other chains in Australia. He then consolidated and sold them for a profit.

The next company caught in Graeme Hart's crosshairs was Australian spice and yeast manufacturer Burns Phillips. He bought a 20% stake in for $200 million in 1997. Initially this looked like it would turn into a major misstep after Burns Phillips posted a 73% write down. Hart's investment in the spice maker was subsequently reduced to one tenth of its original value. But Hart would prevail in the end when he negotiated new round of funding with bankers Five years after his original investment in Burns Phillips, the company accepted a $2 billion takeover offer from Goodman Fielder, an Australian food company. Hart doubled his profits and sold his shares in the company in 2005.
From 2002 to 2012 Hart, through Rank Group, acquired 12 companies with a combined value of $14 billion. Those companies include Graham Packaging, which handles Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Kraft, Heinz & Procter & Gamble and Dopaco (which supplies Burger King and Wendy's). Those two behemoth acquisitions are now part of the Reynolds Group. Rank Group also owns all of UCI and Autoparts Holdings, which make and sell car parts. You may have heard of their product: Penzoil.
Leveraged buyouts are a nasty business, especially when you're on the side of the company being taken over, and even more so if you happen to be on the team working with Graeme Hart on the buyout. Unlike other firms specializing in leveraged buyouts, Hart does not share the returns of the company and does not allow any member of his team to get any equity in the businesses they help takeover. This courtesy extends to his family as well. When Hart owned the chain of bookstores he refused to give his daughter a discount on text books.
Like any billionaire worth his salt, Hart has his own jet, a yacht, and a fishing boat. His sea legs came in handy in January 2007 when he rescued three people and a dog from a burning boat. His flagship yacht, the Weta, which means grasshopper in Maori, cost $150 million. It has 35 bathroom and houses a crew of 30.
On a more personal note, Hart bought a Glendowie, New Zealand home in 1995 for $2 million. Like the companies he acquires, there was no way he could just leave it be. Years of extensive renovations have brought the value of that same house up to $30 million. He also owns a $14 million beach house on Waiheke Island, and a 40-acre, $16 million Aspen estate.

Brandon Browner Suspended; NFL Star Facing One-Year Ban For Substance Abuse

Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Browner is reportedly facing a year-long ban for a second violation of the NFL's drug abuse guidelines.
Browner
According to NFL.com's Michael Silver, the upcoming suspension of the star athlete is for an unspecified violation of the league's substance abuse policy.
Originally, Silver reported that the suspension was for performance-enhancing drugs, but he retracted the report. The suspension, however, appears on.
His sources believe this will signal the end to Browner's career with the Seahawks, but the 29-year-old took to Twitter to defend himself, writing:
"I'm not facing suspension for PEDs, it's sad that the NFL is reporting this."
The NFL, of course, has not actually handed down anything officially, while the PED allegation has since been revised by the reporter who broke the story.
ESPN's Adam Schefter is also reporting that the suspension is for a year:
"Seahawks CB Brandon Browner is facing a one-year suspension from NFL for violating substance-abuse policy, per NFL sources. He has appealed."
Browner's contract expires at the end of the season, and he was suspended for the last four games of the 2012 season after testing positive for Adderall.

Britney Spears: In Love With David Lucado!

Britney Spears may be making out with random dudes and whipping them in her music videos, but it sounds like she's whipped in real life. In a good way.
She revealed that she's is "in love" with boyfriend David Lucado!
"I'm in love ... I like the fact that [David Lucado] is very stubborn and he's stuck in his ways," she tells Entertainment Tonight. "He's just a simple man."
"I adore him. He's really funny and he's really passionate. I love the fact that anything he's involved in he's passionate about and it's contagious."
Britney met David Lucado through friends and admitted that her father ran a background check on him, "My dad's a little crazy like that," Spears said.
The pop star, who's gearing up for her Vegas residency next month, says she wants more children in the future but is unsure if she'll get married.
However, she's not completely opposed to the idea of settling down again.
"I'd like to have more kids, settle down… have more kids - maybe twins - and get married," she told Germany's RTL network. "That would be nice."
David Lucado, a Virginia native, was first seen with Spears in February.
The loving pair was spotted for the first time together out on Valentine's Day, about a month after the singer broke off her engagement to Jason Trawick.
The duo has been happily dating ever since that day.
"David doesn't date anyone else, he is exclusive," an insider said. "They live separately and have separate lives, but they spend time and travel a lot together."
"I think it is pretty serious and they're happy."

Kelly Clarkson: Super Excited Over Pregnancy, Anxious for Second Trimester

Kelly Clarkson is super, duper excited.
She's also super, duper sick and anxious to move along with her pregnancy, which the singer announced via Twitter last week.
Kelly Clarkson Takes the Stage
"I don't know why they call it morning sickness because it's like all day and all night," the singer told Savannah Guthrie on Today this morning. "I'm super excited about being pregnant. I'm just looking forward to the second trimester. They say it's better."
Clarkson said she and husband Brandon Blackstock were going to keep the impending child a secret for awhile longer… but she just couldn't help herself.
"I was just dying to tell people, but we were trying to wait until the end of my first trimester," Kelly gushed. "But everybody kept talking about it and I had to cancel something because I've been so ill. I didn't want people to think that I'm canceling because I'm lazy or something. So, we just told people."
Clarkson is yet to find out the gender of the baby, but she reiterated her gut feeling that it will be a girl.
As for potential names?
"We're not saying because I don't want someone to steal my baby's name," Clarkson said with a laugh.

Alec Baldwin: FIRED By MSNBC!

Temperamental actor and commentator Alec Baldwin has been fired by MSNBC following his homophobic outburst earlier this month ... and low ratings.
Given the controversy and general liability of having him around, the network cut ties with the host of the ratings-challenged Up Late with Alec Baldwin.
Sources at MSNBC confirm that the decision to can Alec was based, in part, on his recent outburst, in which he called a photographer a "c--ksucking f-g."
One would think, given that this wasn't even the first time he went off on an offensive tirade at members of the media. Or the second. This year.
Baldwin immediately went into damage control mode after the incident, but arguably, that only made matters worse for the embattled father of two.
First, he claimed he said the word "fathead." Seriously.
Then, he claimed he did not realize "c--ksucking" could be perceived as anti-gay. Then he trotted out a male hairdresser to prove he's cool with gay people.
Finally, he spoke at a conference and professed his (platonic) love of dudes. It just couldn't get much more awkward and MSNBC apparently had enough.
The network previously suspended him, and later decided that any potential gains from the 55-year-old bringing him back just weren't worth the fallout.

Justin Bieber Fulfills Female Desires, Stars in Very Strange Short Film

Justin Bieber is all about making women's dreams come true these days.
The singer seemingly slept with an occasional porn star named Tati Neves during his recent visit to Brazil and partied with strippers inside his Calabasas mansion earlier this month.
And now the artist stars in "The Key," an unusual short film meant to promote the his new perfume, aptly titled "The Key."
Justin utters nary a word in the movie, simply fulfilling the desires of several woman inside a hotel.
He stops by their rooms as they sleep. He dresses as a bellhop to deliver wedding cake. He feeds one fan macaroons because, hey, who doesn't love macaroons?!?
What do all these females have in common? They sleep with "The Key" beside them in bed.
The ad ends in an Inception-type of way, however, with Justin waking up and realizing he was actually the one having these dreams. WHOA! Sort of makes you think, doesn't it?
But does it make you want to buy Bieber's fragrance? That is the main question.
Watch above and prepare for Justin's full-length film, "Believe" to hit theaters on Christmas Day.
